DIY vs. Pro Car Aircon Regas: What You Need to Know

Thinking of buying a can at the shops? Read this before you destroy your compressor.

Topic: General

With "AC Regas in a Can" kits available at many auto part stores, it can be tempting to try and save money by topping up your system yourself. However, as professionals, we see the expensive aftermath of these kits every week. Here’s why using them is a significant risk to your vehicle.

1. You Can't Remove Moisture

A professional service begins by putting the system under a deep vacuum. This is the most critical step because it boils off and removes any moisture that has entered the system. Moisture reacts with refrigerant to form hydrofluoric acid, which corrodes internal components from the inside out. A DIY can has no way to perform this vacuum, so you are trapping this corrosive moisture inside.

2. Risk of Overcharging

DIY kits only connect to the low-pressure port and use a simple, inaccurate gauge. You have no visibility of the high-pressure side of the system. Every car has a precise gas weight specification (e.g., 550 grams). Without professional scales and gauges, it is incredibly easy to overcharge the system. An overcharged system creates dangerously high pressure, which can blow seals or, in a worst-case scenario, destroy your compressor.

3. The Danger of "Leak Sealers"

Many DIY kits contain "leak stop" additives. These sealants are designed to clog small holes. The problem is, they can't tell the difference between a leak and a critical component. These sealants are notorious for clogging the tiny passages in the expansion valve, receiver drier, and even the condenser. This creates a permanent blockage that requires replacing multiple expensive parts.

Workshop Warning: If a vehicle comes to us and we discover it has been filled with a DIY sealant, we often have to refuse service or charge extra. The sealant contaminates our expensive recovery and recycling machines, putting our other customers' vehicles at risk.

In short, the small amount you save on a DIY kit is not worth the thousands of rands in potential damage. Always opt for a professional, SAQCC-certified service.
