The Overlooked Part Affecting Your Car's Air Quality

It filters dust, pollen, and exhaust fumes from the air you breathe. Here is why changing this cheap part protects your health and prevents expensive repairs.

Of all the components in your car, the cabin air filter is one of the most important for your personal health, yet it's the most frequently ignored. Think of it as the "face mask" for your car, filtering all the air that enters your cabin and your lungs.

What Does a Cabin Filter Do?

Its primary job is to filter out harmful airborne particles before they reach you, including:

  • Dust and road grime
  • Pollen and allergens
  • Soot and exhaust fumes
  • Bacteria and mould spores

Standard vs. Carbon-Activated Filters

Standard filters are made of pleated paper and are excellent at trapping solid particles like dust and pollen. However, for city driving in places like Pretoria, we strongly recommend upgrading to a Carbon-Activated Filter. These filters have a layer of activated carbon that chemically absorbs noxious gases and odours, such as diesel fumes and industrial smells, providing a significantly cleaner and healthier breathing environment.

How a Clogged Filter Damages Your Car

A blocked filter is like trying to breathe through a pillow. It severely restricts airflow, which causes two major problems:

  1. Blower Motor Strain: The fan motor has to work much harder to pull air through the blockage. This strain can cause the motor or its resistor to burn out, leading to a costly repair.
  2. Reduced Cooling Performance: Without sufficient airflow over the evaporator core, your AC cannot cool the cabin effectively, even if the gas is full.

We recommend replacing your cabin filter every 15,000 km or at least once a year. It's a small investment in your health and the longevity of your AC system.
